About Lögmannaskrá

Lögmannaskrá is an independent directory of practising lawyers in Iceland, written in English. It exists to help people who live in, move to or deal with Iceland find a suitable lawyer without needing to read Icelandic.

Where the data comes from

The starting point is the public register of practising lawyers (Lögmannalisti) published by the Icelandic Bar Association (Lögmannafélag Íslands). From it we take each lawyer's name, rights of audience, office location, practice areas and the languages they report.

Contact details such as phone numbers, email addresses and websites are completed from publicly available sources, and law firms are checked against the Register of Enterprises (Fyrirtækjaskrá). Lawyers whose only office is outside Iceland are not included.

How the information is organised

Each lawyer is placed in a town and region based on the postcode of their office. The 48 case categories used by the Bar Association are grouped into 20 practice areas, each with its own page explaining what it covers.

Region and town pages show figures calculated from the listings themselves, such as the number of lawyers, their rights of audience, the most common practice areas and how many work in English. They also name the district court and the District Commissioner (Sýslumaður) that serve each area.

Keeping listings up to date

Listings are reviewed periodically against the Bar Association register, and every lawyer page shows the date it was last updated. Lawyers can change offices, firms or contact details at any time, so always confirm important details directly with the lawyer.

If you spot an error, or you are a lawyer and want your listing corrected or removed, please use our contact form. Corrections and removals are free, and we review every request.

Independence

Lögmannaskrá is not affiliated with the Icelandic Bar Association, the courts or any law firm. Lawyers cannot pay to be listed, to appear higher in the lists or to receive better reviews: listings are shown in alphabetical order and we do not publish ratings.

The website is funded by advertising shown through Google AdSense. Advertisers have no influence over which lawyers appear or what is written about them.

Our articles

The blog explains common legal situations in Iceland in plain English, from residence permits to divorce and accident claims. Articles are based on Icelandic legislation and the information published by the relevant public authorities, and are reviewed when the rules change.

They are general information, not legal advice. For advice on your own situation, contact a lawyer directly.
